Intake

Post by 98yoda » Tue Dec 09, 2008 5:30 pm

Is there anything you can really do to the plastic intake manifold to get better performance out of it, with out buying a different one. Im just trying to keep it kinda stock yet get a little bit of hp out of my engine.

Ok this is straight ghetto but it worked well for me.

basically cut the tube, inserted a piece of exhaust pipe inside the tube to make it hold its shape, then bought a cone filter with 3" ID inlet and used duct tape to make the tube 3" OD. nice clamp and you are good to go. sounds a lot louder mind you so if you don't like intake noise don't do it. i did it for the fuel economy benefits and it has helped over the stock intake.

You don't like the plastic ones do you, and sabu, im talking about the manifold, not the intake piping. Im looking for something like porting and polishing but its plastic. I think im gonna have to get an aftermarket.

you can eat right threw the plastic on them, very very easy to port. fill in the injector humps with jb weld or a good epoxy after it drys you can grind on the humps to remove them very easily. this will give the car a nice smooth pickup and better throttle response

lol my bad.

either way there are ways to p n p the plastic manifold but the performance gains are not worth the time. i polished my aluminum intake and it was a marginal difference for the 5 hours i spent polishing the damn thing. either way i think the intake i made is ballin lmao.

good luck!

Im gonna have to try it soon, well prolly right now while im doing nothing and Sabu, it doesnt look to bad but are you getting any cold air back there? I bought an off brand cold air intake kit for about $10, one of the ones that sit above the exhaust manny, and just ran flexible tubing from the front bumper into the front of the filter. Works pretty good.

Being an ATX and a winter beater I did not spend too much time making it performance orientated. Although being an ATX it does not bog down quite as bad from a dig with the warm air intake I would call it. There is enough space between the exhaust manifold and the filter to say it would be a warm air intake and not cold. I was in the process of making my MTX neon with a true CAI but...what good is a CAI with no motor? Either way its better than stock and that is all I can really say. And hey, it was 20 for the filter and 6 for the exhaust adapter I shoved in the tube hahaha. So for under thirty bucks you have something ghetto fabulous!

Oh and one tip if you are going to try and gasket match or p n p that intake, after you are done soak it in a bath of warm water and tsp then rinse the hell out of it. Filings + piston rings = FTL. Learn from my mistakes.

Edit - Its -23C here right now, there is plenty of cold air, trust me.

try a low profile puller. take a pic so we can see, maybe i can suggest a better tool? some power steering pulley pullers work well in the oddest places.
