Airbag Light Turns On & Off Help!

Post by hotrod » Fri Jan 28, 2011 6:18 am

Strang thing Is when my lady crashed my car the air bag didnt deploy, but before the accident, I recall the Airbag light kept turning on while I was driving every once In a while then turn off.
It feels like a ticking time bomb, everytime that Airbag light comes on I prepair myself for the worst, Bo0M!!!
Is this bad, and how do I fix It?

not sure if you can scan for airbag codes on this. but thats where i'd start.

I went over a really bumpy train track at like 70mph one time and my airbag light went on, then turned off after about 10 seconds. I've seen ot come on 2 or 3 other times too, I always get scared lol

Not sure why it comes on.

Wow kinda surprised no one else answered this yet. My car was doing this and there are a couple of things you can do to check and see what it is.

#1 when you notice the Air Bag light come on, try and Honk the horn. If it does not sound, then your clockspring is bad and needs to be replaced.

#2 remove gauge cluster and re-solder/re-flow all the connections spots. Even if your gauges are working fine this can still be the issue.

#3 Faulty airbag control module. (Un-likely, but since you said it had been in an accident)

My problem was #2. All my other gauges worked just fine, but the light kept coming off and on all the time. I re-flowed the solder and it fixed the issue.

also your airbag wont deploy when you see the light on. When the light comes on the air bag is deactivated.

If its flickering its mostly likely the cluster.

I have an airbag control module if you get to #3 and haven't fixed it.

A bad ignition switch can cause the airbag light to go on as well, but usually with that you will lose wipers, turn signals and blower fan too.

I wouldn't count on 1st gen airbags deploying, it has been many years since I have heard of one going off.

thats because these cars only have front air bags. Not side air bags. The air bags wont deploy on a side impact, only on the front.

they were only designed to work on a front or a rear impact. think about it, that tech is older, now a days they are more advanced.
