96 neon build list
Just bought a 96 sohc mtx coupe for 150 bucks. it runs decent but smokes. motor has 145k on it. i will be cleaning it up and making look better for now.
i have several cars so having this one down for a little while to work on it is now big deal. i do however have a budget. i cant just dive 3 grand into it and go.
any ideas where to start with this thing? looks and creature comfort are not important right now. i want it to run and drive well. the end result will be a very fast and great handling car. i want to try and stay n/a for now. a low boost turbo kit is a possibility in the future.

a 2.4L swap can be done for right around 1k, it would give you the option of boosting later with all OEM parts.
As far as suspension goes there are many options. Eibach springs are plentiful both new and used, Eibach also makes a sway bar kit(front and rear). But that all depends on what you want to do with the car daily drive it w/occasional auto x, strict race car,etc...

and its a more expansive motor to mod you can get a 2.4 to 160-170hp with some decent cams and bolt ons. people have hit 200+ hp with BIG cams and full boltons

What these guys are telling you is pretty accurate. Even though the 2.4L is Heavier, you have a 2.0L SOHC at the moment. The extra 40lbs is not going to make you slower with the HP and torque gain you'll get from the 2.4L. $1,000 is the most it should cost for the swap, i know a guy that bought a 97 Stratus Engine 2.4L (79k miles) for $300 and the rest of the stuff he got cheap. Cost him $6-700 total and he got a Header along with it. Depends how much you can get a good 2.4 for. Check your Junk yards.
