Optima Batteries

Post by 99_fly_by » Tue Oct 06, 2009 3:16 pm

ok so i HATE my duralast gold top cause it has already lost the majority of its charge. i know optima doesnt make a battery specific for the neon but i have seen optima yellow tops in first-gens. anyone got the part number of the battery that fits 1st gens?

I have a red top in the coupe. Part # Red34/78 or 9083547. It's 1000 cranking amps, which is overkill for a Neon. It is a little taller and has to go in a little sideways. ( I think it fits many GM cars because it has side and top posts). But it still fits and works just fine.

Walmart batteries. I usually get rid of the vehicle before I kill the battery.

Ok first of all I am not a big fan of walmart batteries. I have one in my car now and with the little system I have, 250 watts, the battery barely stays above a 10 volt charge when the car is not running even if its only been 30 minutes. I know its not the alternator because thats practically new, only has about 1400 miles on it and the battery is less than 1 year old.

Second, I used to work at OReillys and found out that Optima is starting to phase out some of the yellow tops and its becoming harder to get replacements on them. The red tops are still fine. If you still want a yellow top, the one you are looking for is D34/78.

Red tops last forever, but they are way to heavy. You may want to check out AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries.

i beg to differ, my buddy has one in his shed, it's an oversized paperweight, it wont hold a charge.

I wasn't being literal with the forever term. Ive had a red top in my Jeep for right around 9 years. Still starts up fine. The one in my neon is about 5 years old. I'm only getting rid of it because of its weight.
