Good day fellow neon enthusiasts!

My name is Eric Urness, but everyone calls me Ernie. I've been a neon owner since around 2000. I've had (in order) 99 PR4 R/T , 96 PR4 sport coupe, 98 PR4 R/T, 98 Aquamarine 4dr, and now a Blue 98 R/T.

I use my 98 R/T as a commuter car to work and back... it currently gets 32mpg- 36mpg depending upon how I enter the freeway. I'm hoping that i can add some technical knowledge to this forum and learn some easier/cheaper solutions.

Welcome. I see you have a Jeep Compass. I have a Patriot. Are you on the Patriot boards?

no I'm not on those forums. I was thinking of making a header for it and maybe a CAI.... but alas I bought it so I wouldn't work on it. lol it has the 2.4L VVT engine with CVT & AWD.

Sweet! I bought mine so I would DD it also. Header is cheap for it actually, and CAI kits are cheap too. Mine's a 2010 though lol. And I know the AWD ones have a weird header that is NOT easily replaced because it is integrated with the cat. Mine is a 2.4 dual VVT with the manual transmission and FWD. I wanted the 4x4 so bad =(

Nice, I'll have to check them out. It seems they get pretty terrible mileage for the power.

It would be interesting to swap on of the dual vvt engines into a neon :)

I get 30-35 mixed highway/city. No complaints here. And the headers offered are NOT for AWD models because of that integrated cat.

I get closer to 20-24mpg. It's pretty terrible. My Evo gets 26mpg and it makes over 500whp. I'm failing to see the compromise that was made... I get poor fuel economy because of what again?

Pretty sure it's because of the CVT. I hate that thing.

It's the CVT. My Mom's Ion with a CVT will get mid 30s (which is what the CVT is supposed to do, MTX economy with an ATX).

However our Caliber R/T AWD would get 21-23mpg on my wife's drive to work and if you kept it at or below 65mph you could get 26mpg but as soon as you touched 70, economy plummeted.

Caliber is the same thing as the patriot/compass. You should get the same gas economy as Ernie.
