Test drove a 2009 Cobalt SS

Post by TomZ » Fri Oct 17, 2008 10:00 pm

One of the car mags (it's at my desk at work), don't remember if it was Car and Driver or Road and Track did a comparison this month.
Mistu Ralliart, MazdaSpeed 3, Subie WRX (not Sti) and the Cobalt SS. The Cobalt was the overall winner to their amazement. So I took one for a test drive today. Nice suspension, notchy shifter, good brakes but the engine didn't seem all that powerfull. Maybe the power perception is due to the quiet and smoothness of the package. It built boost very quickly (15 psi indicated), and no cool blow-off woooosh. All in all impressive. Also went to the Scoobie Do dealership with the intent of driving the WRX and WRX Sti. Stood around for 10 minutes without even being spoken to. I left annoyed.
'95 ACR Coupe, 14.366 @ 94.57 MPH Bolt-ons and weight redux (Built 2.4 needs final assembly)
'02 ES Magnum swap, Comp 200 Cam, ACR suspension, bolt ons.
'00 Chrysler LE (Fiancee's) Stock, 1GN R/T rims

I liked it. The reviews dissed the seats, saying they didn't offer a lot of snugness. Even at my small size (5'6"), they were fine. It felt refined during the 15 minute test drive. I did some in-city, a tight highway on-ramp at 3/4 speed and some highway full throttle 2nd and 3rd gear runs. I hit the brakes pretty hard a couple of times too. I'd consider it, but need to drive the Scoobie Do. I'd really like a STi, but they're 10K more than the Cobalt. The Cobalt also has virtually zero flash. Remove the SS emblems, black out the Brembo calipers and you have a real sleeper

I keep hearing nothing but great reviews about the new SS from the automotive press.

In the Car & Driver "Lightning Lap" shootout, the Cobalt SS turbo was faster around VIR than:

# Mitsubishi Lancer EVO MR
# Lexus IS-F
# Honda S2000 CR
# Lotus Elise SC
# Subaru Impreza WRX STI
# Honda Civic Mugen Si

I really like the Subarus, they look good on paper, and my friends modded Legacy GT wagon was a BLAST to drive. They really seem to have some quality issues though, my friend who had that Legacy GT had trouble with it and traded it in for a new '08 WRX, and then had so many problems with it she sold it after only 6 mos..

Man I've been looking for my first "new" car.. It's a HARD decision.

Got my list down to:
07' 350Z
04' SRT-4
09' Mustang GT
09' STi
05' EVO

I like the Cobalts but I just can't imagine driving one.

If I was you it would come between the 09 STi, 05 EVO, and 07 350z

Yeah same here, though probably not the STi after the problems my friend has had with all of her Subarus.

If I had 350z money I would consider an S2000 as well, those cars are just sexy, esp. with the porno red interior.

If you have the time I would spend it trying to find a nice AP1 S2000, you can pick a nice 2003 model for under 15k with low mileage. Ive seen a couple in my area for that much or lower . Unfortunately I wont be ready to pick up one myself for another year or so.

I'm surprised that the Cobalt SS was better than the Mazdaspeed 3. That will be my first "new" car.
