Scrappy, new build list

Post by chipdogg » Thu Jan 24, 2008 6:06 pm

Ok, so the black coupe I was gonna use before got hit the day after I put a new engine in it and I decided it's not worth the trouble to make that a race car, especially since I have this sitting in a barn in Cuba City, WI waiting for me to work on it:

It's a 1997 ACR. Got it June of 2005 for $400 from GT Neon. You can see it in it's former glory at www.gtneon.com.

I got it with the original plan of making a drag car out of it. It came with no Koni's on it and he had converted it to ATX. First thing I did was put a clutch pedal and shifter cables in it.

Here is the build:

2.4L DOHC
Bottom end:
-.020" over, 10.5:1 JE pistons on SRT rods, coated rod bearings
-SRT oiling system
-SRT-4 Crank scraper
Top end:
-Crane 22 cams
-Crower valve springs
-2.7L rockers
-PT Cruiser lifters
-AEM 3-bolt cam gears with JeffB#2's spacers
-light port/polishing of intake and exhaust ports

Breathing:
-Custom box intake manifold, 90mm tb, and custom intake
-Fast Fabs header, cherry bomb, and 2.5" Dynomax exhaust (got it all) ($350 for the whole thing)

PCM/electrical
-none
-Full control MSII (got it) ($200)
-wideband (forgot which one I'm getting from a buddy for $75, but it worked for him with MS, he got a different one cuz the gauge matches better lol)
-External voltage regulator
-Battery in trunk and battery cut-off switch (battery case is already in trunk with wires run)
-Switch board with rocker switches for ignition, stereo, fuel pump, nitrous, and a button for the starter
-full wire tuck (You won't see a single wire, which won't be too hard since I have to completely make the wire harness)

Suspension:
-Koni yellow struts with High rates
-whatever sized sway bars are on the black car now (22 and 20 I think, I'll find out when I pull them off, don't recall) (free)
-Machfly spherical rear control arm bushing, Prothane front

Drivetrain:
-3.94 trans, OBX diff
-PT clutch
-DSS Stage III axles with Shadow bearings and hubs

Nitrous:
-Direct port nitrous kit, 150 shot, controlled by MS nitrous control (that thing is sweet)

Other miscelaneous stuff includes removing everything inside the car that isn't needed. All the tar under the carpet and behind the dash, all the HVAC stuff (blower motor, heater core, vents, switches), windshield wipers, and any wire that isn't needed in the dash will be removed as well.

Shooting for 200 whp on the motor and 350 on spray. Not real big on power goals but I want to hit 13.00 consistently on slicks and high 11's on the spray so I can run 2 classes at each Import Wars race this summer.

Once the snow melts, I'll go pick the car up at my buddy's parents' house (it's in their barn lol) and bring it up here. By then (mid-March or so) I will have everything that I can foresee needing. Of course I'll miss a few things but that's no problem.

I know, poor thing has been in a barn for over a year waiting for an engine. Now that I'm about done with school, it's getting what I promised it when I rolled it into the barn.

What do you estimate the compression to be with the block decked? I still think 190 whp is going to be hard to do with srt internals.

With .040" off the head and .030" off the block, it should bring it to around 10:1. Higher than stock compression. It'll have some tricks done to it internally on the oil system and some other good stuff as well. 190 may be a stretch but I know a bone stock 2.4 can put down 160 whp with just SAFC tuning for e85 (which I plan to run as well).

If I don't hit 190 I won't be super disappointed, I'm not real interested in hitting X peak whp, but rather what it does at the track. The suspension and lightening of the car will help it hit low-mid 13's. I hit 14.4 with a bone stock 2.4 and header with some weight redux in a stock coupe, the ACR should weigh 200-300 pounds less or so.

No corners cut here. Rod bearings are coated, mains are not but that isn't necessary. Rods will be lightened and weight matched to within .5 grams for each assembly. I know some tricks that someone has told me about that free up a bunch of power that generally get overlooked. :)

So, you're going to work on the oil system? Not sure how bad it is on the 2.4, but I think it has to be better than the 2.0.

Not AS bad, seeing how the Stratus touring engines used the 2.4 block and a 2.0 crank mainly for the oiling properties, but it can still be cleaned up. Can gain a few ponies from that according to what a friend said.

There's other stuff you can do as well to gain power, probably the main reason his touring engine puts down ~250 whp N/A with cams approximately equivalent to Crane 16's.

A little OT but did the Euro Chrysler Stratus come with the 2.4 block ? all I can find in the classifieds are 2.0's and V6's.

Interested to see how it turns out. If your compression will be close to 10:1 it should run well...you may even have someone copy your setup :D
