$50 Dollar Paint Job - "Reverse Skunk"

Post by krat0s » Tue May 01, 2007 11:30 pm

Yep.

You bet.

Think of a skunk, and invert the colors. One single black stripe (hood, roof, and trunk lid), the rest are white. All are going to be high gloss rustoleum.

My inspiration comes from http://rickwrench.com/ - he is awesome. Check out his corvair - http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html and see why this is a very plausible thing.

I have never painted anything besides a few things in art, a few rooms in my house, and some most awesome spray paint things. I can barely draw and really I have no artistic talent. Therefore, this will be fun.

---PROJECT LOG---

My pile of crap:

More of crap:

This is why i need a tool chest:

More of a reason of why I need a tool chest and need to build some shelves...:

All of my neon parts are currently stashes in the Camaro:

The paint and the mineral spirits:

The other crap that I baught:
Image

Still going to need more paint, more thinner, more rollers, more pans, more sandpaper... to do it in $50 is hard:
Image

My test hood:
Image

...has a huge chunk of rust that cannot be repaired:
Image

Masked it off:
Image

...and sanded:
Image

...with 150 grit:

I put it on thin...too thin. I tried to mix 50/50 but I defintely need to mix w/ more paint.:

Second close up... it began to level out after a few minutes.:

i've seen it done before with some awesome turnouts. but if u have "unrepairable" rusted parts, i would replace it with one from a junkyard.

Yep I'm rolling it on. Check out the links at the top of my log.

There's a need to have finesse with it, something I'm practicing with this hood.

This hood is a PITA:
Image

Now this freakin' hood has rust through it, been bondoed, is bent, and has a quarter sized ding on it. But it fits, and so that's what I've got to work with.

Image

I taped off everything so that I would not have to worry about overspray or whatever crap I may do stupidly...

ImagexImagexImagexImage

And then basically I painted. Now if you can see, this hood's gouges and all it's imperfections really is going to make it look like garbage. Now the other thing is that the paint is about 60/40, 60 % mineral spirits, 40% RUSTOLEUM gloss black. I really would say the best would be 65-70% MS and then 35-30% RUSTOLEUM. That would make for a much finer spray. The next issue is that I painted too much too fast. Small fine sprays and thin coats are really going to be the big thing. Making sure the surface is smooth before paint and then thin, fine coats. I'm trying not to rush as best as I can.

Other comments:
The compressor is a 150$ deal from Harbor Freight, it's alright. The paint gun is the same, $30, and all the crap and warranties I spent about 250 on everything. But it's way more worth it than rolling, IMO. It is easier and air tools are the bomb diggity. So far the only downside is that you have to take your time and that you have such limited color choices with cheap paint.

Tomorrow I have the day off, so likely the roof and trunk will get 3-4 coats. W00t

So I wetsanded the hood, but then decided to fuck it and that since i'm just going to get another one, I'm going to leave it in all it's glory and that will be that after another 600 grit sand and then polish. The roof was a bitch. One, taping it off finely took me about an hour and a half. Two, even though I tried to feather the edges where the paint already peeled, I can still kind of see it. However I did THIN ASS COATS and therefore it will be fine after more wetsanding and 4 or so more coats. What you see is two coats, no sanding. I starting debadging the trunk lid. Fuck that, my fingernails hurt now. I will finish the roof today and hopefully the trunk lid, and get all my other body panels on.
