In SCCA Solo, SM has become somewhat of a 'catch all' class.
The way classing works, you pick the class, you just can't go to a class that allows fewer modifications than you have. You can run in higher classes if you wish.
So in other words, if you're car is legal fo SM, then you could also possibly run DSP or DP (where Neons are classed in the Street Prepared and Prepared) or in DM (Modified).
The best way to figure this out is to go to:
www.scca.com
download and read the GCR and Solo rules.
Here's a quick and dirty classification sheet that Milwaulkee Region came up with that we use to help folks class their cars at events:
http://scca-milwaukee.org/Solo/carmodan ... cation.pdf
To be honest though, I wouldn't worry too much about where you get classed to begin with, just go and have fun. Don't worry about whether you're going to do well or not. Just go and learn the ropes, ask questions. There's never been an autocross I've ever been to that people weren't willing to help a new-comer, so don't be afraid to ask.
But most of all, have fun.

In Cincy Region they would probably put you in STS. When my ACR was all motor it had some things that technically would have put it in SM, I told them about everything, but they still put me in STS thinking I would be more competitive there, especially being a novice driver. I still never got anything better than last place at any events I ran (I am much better at drag racing unfortunately).
