Plans for my 1st track experience EDIT 6/22 PICS

Post by TomZ » Thu May 10, 2007 6:58 pm

The plan is for National Trails Raceway, outside of Columbus OH, tomorrow night, my birthday present to me!

The bad: 205/50/15 Yokohama YK 420's (Discount Tire Avids), full interior, Stock 100k+ mile 2.0 DOHC, AC, and PS. And #1 bad: ME!
(noob racer),

The good: MPX PCM, 52 MM TB, LTH/no cat, solid front MM, solid bobble, "race" inserts on the side mounts.

By the end of the summer the 2.4 should be ready
I picked up Vinny's old head last week :D

Any tips or advice would be welcome (tire pressure, launch technique, etc.)

Don't really "dump" the clutch of the line to start. After some practice you'll learn where the clutch will engage and at what RPM is best for the launch without too much tire spin. I would put the front tires at about 25psi for traction purposes if they have good tread left on them. If they are worn a bit then a little higher like 27-28psi. I say this because with less tread the softer tires could wear more than you think at lower pressure. Also with less tread you could wear them down to the soft compound and get a blow out from the heat and friction at launch...I've seen it and it wasn't pretty. I don't have track slips to show for it, but I have alot of experience on launching a car. I used the closed airport runway about 20 min. from my house to practice on. No real track necessary for that just measure out a 1/4 mile on the runway and launch it.... HAVE FUN!

you'll be nervous your first run and after that you'll feel like a pro, although your times won't back it up ;)

Just work on getting the stage down (which isn't hard). Make sure you drive around the burnout box too, just go straight to the deep stage as the dude tells you. If you accidentally pull in front of stage just hurry up and back up if you can. If not you will have shallow staged and then more then likely red light it.

launching varies on all cars. Dont launch with to much rpm or you'll just spin. If you feel wheel hopp let out on the gas. I'd run 22PSI on fronts and 45PSI in the rears. Keep checking them throughout the night as if it's a decently hott night out and your running a lot the PSI will rise on you. Main point is just have fun ;) and make a couple runs then rest the car and then make a couple then rest ... so forth. don't break an axle ;)

i say run em at 30 up front and 35 in the rear. these are street tires, not drag tires. Running em at lower psi-less vehicle control and less grip.

stage the car outside of the groove(closer to the wall than most of the others) street tires do NOT like traction compound.

Start outside the groove, once you hit third gently work over into the groove(black strip down the middle of the track).

I doubt you'll break an axle, the street tires will spin quite easily. Try not to bog, a good launch will get you a little spin then you'll hook and go. Bogging the car usually involves a break somewhere, or a severely pissed off clutch.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunatly the car crapped out on the way to the track. It's cutting out electricaly. I used the wrong cleaner on the main wiring connector behind the PDC and I'm having a helluva time cleaning it out. It will run OK for a while 20 mins or so, them the same old crap, cutting out above 5K then gets progressivly worse. If I rev it too much it shuts down and won't restart for a couple of mins, or so. It likes to throw a 32 (EGR) but I haved a MP PCM and the resistor in the removed EGR wiring, It'll throw other random codes too. Right after I clean it with contact cleaner, the 32 goes away on its own, then comes back. It's driving me nuts! And no track tonight. :(

Trying again tonight! The wiring harness has been changed and heavily heat shielded. I've done minor weight redux: passenger seat, rear seat, rear speakers and package shelf upholstery. If time allows the front MM weight, stereo, front speakers, ect will be pulled. I picked up some Azenis on R/T rims. I know the Azenis are for Auto-X, but they should hook up better than street radials. I'll get some slicks, but not until the knuckles and driveshafts are upgraded. As long as the rain is over for the day, it looks good for tonight!

honestly i wouldn't worry about slicks till your into more power. RIght now you'll bog hard on em at anything under 6000rpm and that will destroy driveline parts, i dont care how strong they are.

20x8x14 would be ok, but those are so useless for us due to the height, i woudl say a good set of bfg drag radials, those are sticky and streetable.

IT WAS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got in 12 runs. :D

It was vey hard to get traction, regardless of tire pressure, launch rpm, track position, whatever. First four passes I concentrated on Reaction Time, then I kept trying to get the launch without spinning, and didn't concern myself with R/T.

First run, wasn't ready for the light

Damn yours sits as high as mine does when gutted!

With that much out, you should be able to cut better 60' times. You'd probably get real close to 14's with better launches and maybe some more weight out. Hell you might hit 14's before Skill lol.

Maybe it's just my fat ass sitting on the front fender that makes it look so high :D

No matter what I did: clutch dump at 2k, 2.5k, 3.0K, clutch slip at same rpms, various tire pressures from 32 to 23 PSI, main groove, tighter to the wall, nothing seemed to help.

I see drag radials in the near future. The intake is all ported and 50% polished, maybe I can finish it up this weekend. It has Vitor's plenum spacer and TB spacer also. I've got a couple of Jeep 60 MM TB's to mod. The UD pulley will get installed, all before the next time. I was going to wait until the engine swap to do the Phantom Grip, but..... There's more weight to shed too. I haven't removed any of the sound deadener, the rear sway bar can go. The brackets for the front and rear strut bars are still in. Door panels and speakers are still in.

I was only expecting mid 16's, so the 15.1 was incredible, especially since it was my first time. I don't think 14's are very far away at all. :D

Yeah sorry I missed your call I was camping in an area with no cell service.

Good times for the thing, and like you said 14s won't be far along at all, maybe even just by more passes and getting used to it. Did you try launching from idle at all?

anyone can hit 14s on weight reduction
I"m running full interior and untunned.

Hell all i gotta do is have sex before i run and could hit 14s.
