SOHC N/A Builds!

Post by AllMotorWes » Thu Feb 15, 2007 7:50 am

Just as the heading says, list your SOHC N/A build. Post which parts had the most gain, and which parts every SOHC should have.

I'll start with some of the basic (known) mods:
- Iceman/3.0 Intake
- Light Weight UDP (AF/X, MPx, etc...)
- 55mm/60mm Throttle Body
- Long Tube Header (Kirk, TTI, etc...)
- Less restrictive Exhaust (DOHC is a cheap way to open up.)
- Remove P/S & A/C
- Weight reduction

Just keep adding to the list. :-D

Oh boy, here we go.....

The start:

Atx 52mm tb
3.0l intake(nice gains for the $)
MPx udp(revs alot faster)
Pacestter header(sounds good but didnt gain what I thought I would)
Dohc muffler( great mod!!!)
Iceman(replaced the 3.0 and it rocks! Deep as hell growl!)

I think that was it until this is my setup currently:

Crane #14(obviously the best gains!)
RHR head decked .030" & P&P
Magnum valve springs
AMM intake mani
Kirk longtube
Dynomax 2.5"
MPx udp
Lorenzo 60mm tb(last one eva!)
MPP PCM
filled mounts
relocated battery
Apexi Safc
cut down shifter

I'm looking into getting a Crane #14 Cam for my car. Does it really make a difference having an Adj. Cam Gear along with it for more HP gain?

a cam gear moves your power band for were you want it. its not nessasary, but will help later

wes you will need to swap to mtx to get any real gains out of that #14 or you won't be able to take advantage of the rpms, but I should have everything you need and I mean everything

I agree, if your going to do a N/A build, you have to be running a mtx. The only reason I think anyone on here, who is building something performance oriented, should have an auto is if you're building a turbo monster with like 700hp and plan on racing it at the strip frequently. With that much power, a built ATX is your friend.
'95 N/A SOHC Budget Drag Car in the works!

Shooting for some low 13's/high 12's by the end of summer.

Looking for some cheap magnum valve springs, a solid FMM, a solid bobble, and a nice non-mod clutch setup.

Ture, unless your going huge turbo you have to be a MTX to be even sort of quick. If not your bassically wasting your time and money.

Every sohc needs a better intake manifold! The first gen one sucks royally, small plenum and suuuper long runners. Really hurts power up top.

For example, there was another guy with similar mods to my old car, I'll try to remember
Stock magnum longblock
I had an af/x untuned, he had a mopar pcm + safc
I had a mag header/cat, him a blackdog longtube
Both had some UDP
My intake setup was a 3.0l tube, 52mm tb, and a 1998 plastic intake mani with reduced injector humps. This is the important difference, his was a magnum intake manifold. Unsure of throttlebody size.
Image

Stay with me. This dyno is his, plus points I added from my dyno. We had just about the same power before 5750 rpm. I then added points from my dyno in green, onto his, to show where my power dropped off while his continued. Ignore the pink/purple line that I added.
Red is a stock magnum longblock, the blue line is a sole addition of a crane #14.

He only made a few more peak whp, but that's where the deception shall end. Look at the actual difference at high rpm, pretty much 20whp+ more than me after 6.5k rpm! Huge advantage.

I did some rice dynowork at measured the gain in horsepower he had vs mine by percentage, and added that to my dyno.

Image
The blue line added by excel is of a stock 1995 sohc. The middle lines are my old car. The red line added on is the gain in power one might get. 50whp at 7.5k rpm, I used to shift at redline, silly me, I never plotted out my shiftpoints. BUT, with that much power at top, it makes sense to shift at redline.

Intake mani is a must with a cam. It gives such huge gains, youd be stupid not to.
