Magnum Head?

Post by vielecustoms » Wed May 21, 2008 4:17 pm

I have heard that the magnum head is better flowing than the stock sohc head and that I can swap the magnum head onto my sohc block . before I get flamed I did search here and the .org but seem to only come up with the whole magnum engine swap.

will it fit? what do I need? anything to make it better?

The mag head is definitely an upgrade from the regular SOHC head. It almost flows as much as a DOHC head. You're going to want to get a Magnum intake manifold or any manifold better than the regular SOHC one.

When you find a magnum head, make sure you have an oil restrictor in the passage from the block to the head (came stock in 95 Neons) and to chamfer the 3 oil return holes in the back of the head. Oil likes to stay in the head on Magnum engines, especially the early ones. Not a good problem to have.

What does the restrictor look like? I have a 95 head and bunch of other parts but I just got rid of my 95 parts car.

that pic is decieving with the port size........... the gasket on the mag head is a bit bigger then the ports so theres carbon surrounding the outside edges of the ports making it appear as if thats all port ur seeing on the head........... especially since the mounting surface of the sohc head is cleaned of its carbon surrounding the ports. stock mag exhaust ports may flow close to what the dohc but the dohcs intake will definitley outflow the the mags.

Need a ported/ custom intake manifold or system, oil catch can, or ported head? (look here...... http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?t=259775) shoot me a PM for details. Headers and turbo manifolds to come shortly.

i see what you mean, you can see the carbon outline... but if its gasket matched wont that improve the flow like a million percent?(figuritevly speaking)

u can "gasket match" the exhaust side as long as the exhaust manifold or header or whatever u have attached to the head has bigger primaries or tubes................. because if they are matched u will get reversion (especially if u are running a cam with over lap) or if they are smaller then im sure u can se whay that would be a bad thing................. lots of turbulance. so yes gasket match but only if its still smaller then the openings of the exhaust manifold.

The restrictor is in the block itself. If you look down the hole that the oil comes up (behind cylinder 4 on exhaust side, right on/near the corner) it should be there. Just a little piece of metal that fits into the hole and has a smaller hole in it. About 1-2 inches long and just as big as the hole.
