Have a question about how to make horsepower going the all motor route, here's where to ask it.

cam

Post by 99sport » Mon Jul 28, 2008 8:35 pm

hey guys. just wondering what crane cams would be the best to run with both the top and bottom end rebuild kits from modern with the 12:1 pistons, AEM cam gears, kirk long-tube headers, mopar pcm, indy manifold, 60mm tb, iceman and magnaflow exhaust, i want one that sounds nice at idle but pulls like a raped ape at higher rpms. i was thinkin the 22s cause it says to use them with a fully built high compression engine. and also, this is off the n/a topic, but if i decide to turbo later, if i keep it at like 6-8 psi, would i have to change to lower compression pistons, or would it be safe to run low psi with the 12:1s. this is for a 99 sport DOHC mtx.
thanks in advance

You can run 12:1 compression with boost if you have a fuel that can handle it (110 octane min.) and the ability to retard ignition timing in boost.

NO! Don't run high compression and turbo unless you have alot of money to spend rebuilding your motor.

You have to know what you're doing and what parts to use. The fuel type makes a huge difference. There have been plenty of race teams that have run high compression with high boost. I've seen 15:1 with over 20lbs of boost from a very large turbo. That's almost diesel territory. Spark timing is critical at those levels, and tuning should only be done by the best.

Your best bet is to build a low compression turbo engine if you want boost. Leave the high-comp stuff to the race teams.

Or build for N/A and forget about boost.

You don't possess the knowledge to get a high comp/high boost motor running right. Especially if you're asking about cams on here....

Do yourself a favor and pick either N/A or FI and build for one, not both, you'll cause yourself more problems than your wallet can handle.
this is all you need to know..bored out, high compression, big cam, aviation fuel....bus lengths.

yeah your right i do have knowledge of cars, but its just the basic stuff, fixing small problems, basic bolt ons and stuff like that, but as for building a perfomance engine, i have no freakin clue, my dad used to build engines, but all he ever built were the bigger small block v8s and some big blocks(all carb'd) he knows way more then me but he doenst know much about fuel injected 4 cylinders performance wise, but we are both gonna learn as we go along through doing and good friends that are really good mechanics, plus im getting ready to go to college to become ASE certified, we're gonna take it slow but it will get done. but nobody has answered my question yet, i am stickin to n/a cuz i scare my parents when i drive and they dont want me to go turbo till i can prove to them i am responsable enough(their words). anyways, any tips, tricks or advice would be helpful too.
thanks

is this going to be a 2.0 or 2.4? that right there makes a big difference in cam selection....10.5 is good with crane 18s in a 2.0 but with the same compression in a 2.4 you will need to run crane 22s.
