Test and Tune

National Trail Raceway, Hebron (Columbus), Ohio

I took the car to the truck scales just before racing; 2280 with a little less than 1/4 tank of fuel and no driver. The package shelf is gone, the hood only has enough bracing to hold the hinges, and the trunk lid is just the skin, officially it's now a beer can

I got in nine runs. The trans has been giving me trouble going into 2nd and 3rd. I finally figured out it's the shift cables, not the trans.
Under normal shift conditions it's fine 1-2 and 2-3, but on hard full power shifts it doesn't want to engage, causing missed shifts. If you put just a little pressure outboard on the 1-2 shift it's fine, full power. If you put a little extra outboard pressure the shifter for the 2-3 shift it's fine also. I think I need to slightly adjust the crossover cable.

All the 60's were 2.0XX's, 2.011 the best, 2.071 the worst, five were in the 2.05X range, two were 2.015's. Several of the ET's were crappy due to missed shifts. I figured out the shifter technique on the last two runs, netting the best time and a 14.430 @ 94.76.

My goal for the season was a sub 14.4. I'm really pleased. :D

It wasn't very cool last night so maybe there's a little more yet for the final Halloween Fri night event?

Is a sub 14.3 possible? I've got some timing gears, and a Crane MIS DIS coming form Ebay auctions. Maybe with just a 'lil tuning.....

I'd love a set of 18's for the last event, but the 18's won't be enough cam for the 2.4 I'll be building shortly. I'd need a SAFC, better valve springs and Wideband to make them run properly.

The head I have for the 2.4 already has Crane VS, PT lifters and rockers and a 3 angle valve job (thanks Vinny!) It wouldn't make sense to upgrade the current head just for one night. The final night might not even happen (weather).

The smartest/most cost effective idea would be to install the cam gears and bring it to the dyno for what ever gains could be had. I'd also like to know what power it makes with the stock motor.

What was the temp at the track? It is supposed to cool down considerably by next weekend. If you can still maintain traction another tenth might not be out of the question.

Thanks guys. I don't know what the track temps were, but it hit 91* during the day. I wonder where there's 300 more pounds to ditch? 13.99 would make me mess myself, lol. I'm at the point where there's maybe another 100 pounds at best to remove, then it's pricey, lightweight parts: fiberglass doors, lexan windows, ultra-light wheels, coilovers ect. I can still remove more dash and heater parts, get a 1/2 radiator, ditch one of the cooling fans, replace the A/C type heater core with a non AC type, Odessey battery and install the Fidanza flywheel I already have. One thing that sucks is, next season I should be fast enough to need a cage, then a bunch of weight goes back in. I'm trying to keep it streetable, so max weight reduction has certain limits.

Habe you tried making a pass with the alternator belt off? Would have to have some effect on the ET.
