Like every other city in China, Guangzhou has its unique attractions, lots of history and plenty to see and do. The city of Guangzhou is the capital and largest city of the southern Guangdong province of China. Cantonese is the first language spoken by half of the 14 million residents; while most of the others mainly speak Mandarin and Hakka. The city is built along the banks of the Pearl River just 120km north-northwest of Hong Kong and north-northeast of Macau respectively. The history can be dated as far back as 206BC, and has been considered the most important port in southern china.
Guangzhou has a vast array of attractions but to get to know the city, you should first check out some of its classy monuments and buildings such as the Canton Tower (the tallest TV tower in the world). Also an architectural masterpiece is the Aiqun Building.
Beijing Road Walking Street is a great place to visit at night. It is a shopping district and a great place to buy some souvenirs.
The Chimelong Xiangjiang Safari Park is home to the largest concentration of white tigers on the planet. Many tourists and locals alike have a great affection for this zoo because of its range of wildlife species. A full day is required as it is quite large and a certain amount of walking is required to get around to finish seeing all the animals here.
If you have the time, do take a trip to Shamian Island. It is a lovely, tree-lined neighbourhood bordering the Pearl River. It was once home to foreign merchants, and today is a laidback area ideal for strolling or stopping for a meal or a cup of tea.
