Quick photo update.....

Those on Facybook know that I am a little farther than these pictures, but I am always slower updating this log. :D

The full set looked like this....

Image

Guy that had them planned on putting them on his wife's beetle, hence the red lips. Bleh! They had the standard peeling and corrosion problems these RX II's seem to always have. But the plus was that there was no bends or even any curb rash.

Decided to break them down and pay to have them blasted. First time ever needing a triplesquare bit on anything. (If you own or work on German cars you know what I'm talking about) Ended up breaking only one of the supposed "Titanium" bolts off. The key was to work slowly, breaking them loose with a breaker bar in a criss cross pattern. BBS does not recommend average people taking these apart, heck they will not even sell the replacement bolts to anyone but authorized dealers and repair shops.

Broke down and back from the sandblasters. Note that one of the lips was started on.

Pretty clean.....yea I know my furniture sucks.

The whole polishing the lips process is about done but I will go over it.

Involved mounting the barrels on the tire changer machine. Using an air grinder with an abrasive disc, rotated the barrels and ground on the lips to remove the rough casting and any low spots.

Second, took 400 grit on a DA to smooth it out and remove any "lines" left in the metal by the grinder.

Moved up to 800 grit which then showed some of the shine coming through.

Finally took some smaller buffing wheels mounted to a die grinder and buffed with some aluminum polish.

A little too ricery for me. I believe wheel colors should complement the main color of a car. Not go with it by ways of painted lips or being the same color. Just over the top IMO if it's the same.

Uhhhhhhh! This foray into powder coating is hit or miss. The centers came out effing great.

But this clear that I'm using on the lips of the barrels is crap. used the same method for these as the centers. Wash, bake at 400 to dry, spray, re-bake to cure. Sprayed on a layer of clear and it ended up with fisheyes all over. Did another but wiped of the surface with thinner this time and ended up with less. Googled and found out it sort of a common problem. The solution is just restripping and coating it again.

Now leaning to doing the whole barrels in black and screwing the whole clear thing.

Hmm, the black may look pretty good. I love the gold by the way. Those rims are nice.

Huh????

I was going for 4X4 status.

There will be a band-aid fix untill the new suspension bits arrive. (which will match the wheels)
