My heap

I did a post on neons.org, but I'll paste it here for ya'll.

4/18/08

Mods at the time were:
Mopar DOHC computer
3.0 Intake
AFX Long tube Header
2.5" Dynomax exhaust
Dynomax super turbo camaro muffler
Crane Ignition system
Launch limiter set at 5500
20x6x14 Mickey Thompson ET Drags on 1gn RT rims with 25 PSI of air
Plus a carload of tools, random crap, and my stock rims and tires, and I'm not skinny.

R/T: .893 (wasn't working on that)
60': 2.155
330: 6.442
1/8: 10.023
1/8 MPH: 67.76
1000': 13.110
1/4: 15.746
1/4 MPH: 85.51

When I was getting towards the end of the track I was up past 6800 RPM's, and thats where I really start dying off. I think if my motor had a little more top end, I would have done better overall.

Then I texted SuperD to tell him what I ran. He texted back "Your axles hate you now!"

I decided it was time to step it up a little. I set the rev limiter to 5800, and aired the tires down to 20 PSI. Then I snapped the drivers axle. Luckily my buddy was there, and we made it to autozone and I had the axle finished before the track closed! w00t!

I have a timeslip but its hard to read.

Image

And then Tonight's Update:

Ran it again today! Didn't get a 15.7, but I did 4 runs and didn't break anything! Setup was the same as the original post, with the slicks, mods...and all the same crap in the car. I did lost my PS and AC belt going down the track on the 2nd run. That was embarassing to say the least.

Had the 2-step set at 4200. Only used it on the first two runs.

First run:
Forgot to turn off the rev limiter. Hit it in 1st, then shifted to 2nd, turned it off, and then ended up shifting to 4th at about the 1000' mark.

R/T: 1.110
60': 2.498
330': 7.377
1/8: 11.138
1/8 MPH: 64.85
1000': 14.304
1/4: 16.941
1/4 MPH: 84.99

2nd Run: Launched with the rev limiter, kinda slipping the clutch till it got close to off, then kicked off the limiter.
R/T: 1.060
60': 2.316
330': 6.684
1/8: 10.338
1/8 MPH: 67.63
1000': 13.459
1/4: 16.106
1/4 MPH: 82.97

3rd Run:
Didn't use the 2-step at all. Staged and ran it up to about 5000 or 5500, and slipped the clutch and kept the revs up. I didn't flat shift to 2nd, but I did into 3rd.
R/T: .650
60': 2.286
330':6.584
1/8: 10.211
1/8 MPH: 66.91
1000': 13.306
1/4: 15.936
1/4 MPH: 85.79

4th Run:
My best run of the night. Did basically the same thing as before, launched around 5500 or so, somewhat slipping the clutch, but kept my foot on the gas when I shifted. Finally beat someone too, this guy was running a Dodge Ram 50, which ran an 18.684@70.88

R/T: .749
60': 2.205
330': 6.467
1/8: 10.097
1/8 MPH: 68.19
1000': 13.193
1/4: 15.825
1/4 MPH: 83.42

Seem a little weird that my MPH is all over the place. But I guess since I didn't launch and shift the same its explainable.

Yea that does seem slow. My r/t before i did the swap was doing 15.6 consistently on street tires. I only had bored tb mopar ecu and 3.0 intake

Well, I do weigh 285 lbs, and I did have about 40lbs worth of tools, and my stock rims in the trunk still. There were no weight redux done to the car. I have a feeling I need to do my spark plugs again soon. We'll see how it goes later on. Next time I run, I'll make sure to have all that crap out of it.

I didn't run the quarter, but I ran the 1/8th with a sedan that had street tires, 3.0 CAI, Pacesetter header, 2.5'' piping, cat delete, DNX muffler and weight redux (no cam, PCM or anything) and regularly hit the low/mid 10's (9:47 being the best to date).

So you should theoretically be faster than that.

You have to take the trans into consideration as well. Only performance "mods" you have are a 3.0L intake and a header. Adding a atx tb and udp would help get the revs up, but you are running what a lightly modded sohc runs. Cut down the excess in the trunk and such and you'll be fortunate to see a 15.5. Suppose I'll put some dohc pistons in that block and show you what you are missing. DOHC buddy. Stop chasing your tail already.

It does have an ATX TB and the computer, but I'm still running my 3.55 trans. I really want to continue the sohc path, but I think a turbo dohc is in the future of this car.

The computer does not "add" power. It is more of a amplifier in a sense, and there is not much to amp up in your cars current state. Not ragging on ya. Just the reality of it. You get more from a mtx dohc, and even more from a 2.4L. That is my next step. Just found one on a 97 stratus. Displacement FTW. Just think about it Jerry. All the work you are doing to the sohc, and you can get a 2.4L dohc from the yard ($180 minus manifolds) and turbo that ($500 - just throwing numbers around) and have a 12sec to 11 sec neon from the start for under a grand. You cannot deny the numbers man. Especially when you are on a budget. It costs less to go bigger and faster. I have a hoist and plenty of parts when you see the light. Does that help

What are you shifting at? There was a time in my old black car (sohc/3.55) that I thought about just putting it back to stock. At that time it had the dynomax catback and a tti race pulley with minor weight reduction (probably just the a/c, power steering, sound deadening and spare tire/jack)
It was still a mid 15 second car at a track 1400' above sea level. I shifted as close to 6750rpm as possible. I see a lot of neons that look like they should be faster. People have done all kind of crazy things like shifting at 6k rpm. It really slows you down.

The computer sure enough DOES add power.

No idea why you're just making up things. But that is direct proof of a computer adding power on a sohc that is less modified than his.

Whoa whoa whoa, easy ladies.

I was shifting at around 6700 or 6800. When I was going through the traps, my speedo was at 95 or so since I'm running such short tires. Next time I go, I'm making Christy go with me, so I can nearly gut the car.

I understand your skeptic view on my post, but take into account I get parts far cheaper than most people around. For example, I picked up a used t3/t4e 57 trim for $100. No shaft play, and it came with an exhaust housing. No the one I am going to use, but a complete turbo just the same. Easily a $400-$500 purchase. Hell, my neon as it sits now has barely $400 into it with iceman w/tray, atx tb, af/x udp, dohc head swap with pt valve train, aem cam gears, stainless steel dohc mid length header, mopar pcm, dohc lettered valve cover, 03 r/t trans, b&m sts, boobger bushings, rear disc swap. 19mm rear sway, 1G r/t front sway...you get the idea.

Well, that is a moddified car unfortunately, but I took notice. Pullies seem to be in the mix with dyno numbers. GET ONE Jerry! Really makes all the difference, expecially with using that pcm. Any clue to the intake used?

The intake is just a 3.0 intake with a generic filter on it. I'm gonna go buy a real K&N soon, but I'm finally getting around to finishing the ghetto blaster I have. So I'm gonna wait on buying a filter until I see where my CAI is going to be.
