Cleaning up the 15" honeycomb rims

Post by Gray » Tue Apr 12, 2011 9:45 pm

is it possible to polish the 15" honeycomb rims to be almost like a chrome? My uncle has acid washing setup for his truck wheels and some high powered compound and some other cleaning utilities.. just wondering if anyone has done this and has any suggestions on good stuff.

Clean them really really well, scuff 'em, and paint 'em chrome.

Spray can chrome only works on model cars, and barely at that.

You could sand, polish, and buff the wheels to be very shiny, then hit them with clear. I've known a guy that used to do that with beer kegs before the deposits went throught the roof.

There are now "chrome look" powders out there for powder coating. I'm sure there is someone in your area that can do it.

Also companies and oe's are using Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) as an alternative to electroplating chrome onto the surface. Uses some of the techniques of powercoating to achive better results that stand up to salt during winter.

But both these methods cost some $$$ like you said.

You could also try to find the snowflakes that came in chrome themselves. But finding a mint set will be hard to do.
