how to paint rims.....

Post by 1fast2liter » Thu Nov 29, 2007 2:10 am

well this is pretty straight forward...

start out by washing the rim in some mild soapy water say dawn or what not.

then wet sand with same soapy water using 600 grit paper.... do the whole rim bach and front. if their is a polished lip and you want to keep it that way do notsand on it....

after you have wet sanded wash it again and wipe down with some type of mineral spirits, i use rubbing alchol but aceton works too.

wipe wheel down with a clean dry towel.

tape where ever you don't want tape.

and then spray your paint... any color will work i have used cheapy walmart 99 cents a can paint. my rims on my audi i painted with walmart black paint and have not pealed or any thing in the past 2 yrs.

if you want custom colors go to your local shop and request a custom color in a spray can youll need at least 2 if not 3 cans.... after it drys i sugest getting engine clear and use that as clear... do not use regular paint clear it dose not get hard enough. use say 2-3 coat of paint and 2-4 of clear... 25mins of flash time between each coat of paint. then let it dry 4hrs then clear.

any questions feel free to ask.

Careful if your taping off the tire, tape doesnt sitck very well to it and its easy to get overspray on.

Yea, I need to repaint mine. They are so beat up.

I think I'm going to take a dremel and clean up the lip, cause it's beat to hell with curb rash, then take it to Tires Plus to get them balanced.

I used industrial solvent and a scraperto get rid of the original paint when I did my paintjob.

Can I use the same method on rims or os that a no-no ?

i wouldn't do that at all unless the finish is messed up... just scuff them up and spray them, a red scuff pad or 120 grit sand paper should be plenty to get a strong bond

by the way if you take and coat the rubber in shampoo let it dry and do that 3 times or so any over spray you mite get on the rubber will wash off with water.
