Well, after breaking one of the ears on the crank pulley off (you know, the ones that you need to put the jaws of the puller on?), and being set back about half a day because of that, I did get the engine put together and timed and one axle in on wednesday night. The axles were both in, the oil changed, transaxle filled with Synchromesh, and the car finally started for the first time in months yesterday afternoon.
I started playing with the tuning a bit but called it a night before too long. Here's where I left off last night.
Went out to the garage to do a little tuning before work. Holding it at around 3500 rpms for around 10 seconds led to this:
Yep, that's the timing belt straight through the inner cover. Now I'll have to tear down all the timing components sometime next week, because I won't have a chance to untill then. There's something not lined up properly (crank sprocket on too far) or something loose (tensioner idler pivot bolt). Either way, it looks like another teardown is imminent.

Tore the timing stuff down and found this:
That's the tension idler's pivot bolt. It somehow cracked and the idler was leaning toward the block, pushing the belt that way.
I'm super glad the belt didn't snap. I'm not sure if this is bits of the belt, or the inner cover. Either way, Id say I was lucky.
The car is now running, and I have some vids, but they're too big to put on photobucket, so I'll have to make a youtube account.

I just don't think I like a set of wheels on the 1G any better than those... I must have some
