DOHCRT's Project - 298whp -

Post by DOHCRT » Sun Aug 05, 2007 1:59 am

I am finally rebuilding the engine in my 98 R/T. After 140,000 miles, its about time. It still runs great, but I want more power. I considered doing a 2.4 swap with SRT internals, but I want to stay with the 2.0L DOHC thats in it. I want it to make 260 whp.

As of now, the engine has a ported SRT turbo setup running at 8psi. I am going to stay with the SRT turbo for now, but I am building the engine with enough strength to handle much more than 260 whp with a larger turbo. I will be doing extensive work to the engine and possibly some chassis modifications.

Here is a list of modifications that will be done:

Block:

- Eagle connecting rods w/ ARP cap screws
- JE 8.8:1 forged pistons
- JE Rings
- ARP main studs
- ATI harmonic damper
- Bore cylinders .020 with a torque plate
- Machine deck surface to match line bore
- Precision balance and blueprint block, rotating assembly, and reciprocating assembly
- Chamfer crankshaft
- Polish crank journals
- De burr all casting lines on block and crankshaft
- Moroso oil pan

Cylinder Head:

- Brian Crower valve springs and Ti retainers
- Stock cams
- PT lash adjusters
- 2.7L Followers
- Unorthodox cam gears
- Machine surface
- MLS head gasket
- Port and Polish
- ARP head studs

Engine Management:

- Mega Squirt

Drive Train:

- Phantom Grip LSD
- Maybe PT axles and hubs

Chassis:

- Sub-frame connectors
- Brace strut towers to firewall and front sub-frame rails
- K-member brace

Suspension:

- Adjustable sway bars with heim joints

As you can see, this is a long and expensive list. I don't think I will be able to accomplish everything at once. My main focus is going to be on the block. The engine is getting pulled next week, and parts should be coming in within the next two weeks, so I will update this thread as I go.

More stroke isn't always better.
Looking forward to tear down pics; good luck.

Yes, Im using an intercooler.

I was really looking into the 2.4 more from a strength standpoint. The 2.4 block is superior in strength to the 2.0.

Sure it is, there's no replacement for displacement. Bigger engines spool turbos up faster due to more air movement per rpm. Plus you can't beat an SRT bottom end for well under $300 that's been proven to hold 500 whp.

and once again you know it all

what's funny is your dinky little 2.4 even fully turbored couldn't out beat my buddy's 2.0 turbo motor.
He just recently put down a dynoed 431 or 471 fwhp srt4.

Don't believe me that sometimes more stroke isn't always better?
Then i'll point you to stewart racing engines and you can tell them that and they will laugh in your face.

If all goes well, I am going to pull the engine and trans tomorrow.

I called Modern today to see about getting Long rods and matching pistons. They said they will have to call me back. I know Howell sells them, but I don't want to deal with them. If Modern cant get them, I may just use stock length rods.

I am also considering Crower billet rods.

Last I checked, srt-4's are 2.4's there. I never said 2.0's can't put down power, show me where I said that. I just said larger engines can spool up turbos alot easier. How come Steve Lockett has 2 turbo 2.4's? Len just switched to a 2.4 last year, Mike Crawford uses a 2.4 too.

And 431 or 471 can be put down by an SRT internaled 2.4 much easier than in a 2.0. You should learn how turbo systems work.

Sure if you wanna rev higher, a shorter stroke is better, but there are many reasons a longer stroke is better, mostly N/A though. Turbos can help make up for the difference but you'll still be able to move more air easier with a larger engine (and more air means more fuel which means more power, derr).

much easier ... nope.
Check into monday's project log he pushing around 321hp and can put srt4s to shame not to mention the bike he raced not to long ago as well.
He was neck and neck with him.
He runs 12.08 on DRs and will be getting 10s here soon.
And yes he is turboed.
Dodsn't matter what len and all those other dudes did?
Funny how you base your life on them all the time.
They are DA GODS! :headbang:

Again, where did I fucking say 2.0's can't put down lots of power and be fast? I said 2.4's can spool up turbos easier and flow more air at lower rpms (thus producing much more torque, as well as horsepower) due to the increased displacement being able to flow more air easier. You need to rev a 2.0 ~20% higher to achieve the same amount of air flow. Again, learn something about turbo systems. I know a bit, I've turbocharged a few cars, mainly Hondas.

I guess you can't read either. Nowhere did I say small engines can't produce lots of power, I said it's easier on a larger engine because you don't have to rev as high, and that they produce much more torque at lower rpms. Hondas don't do that. I've turbo'd a couple so I'm not a stranger to Hondas.

Sorry DOHCRT :?

I didn't get to pull the engine today. Its almost ready to come out. I need to pull the axle shafts and then it will be free.

I talked to Modern today about the pistons and rods. They can get me the Eagle longs rods, but the JE pistons are custom made for the rods. Unfortunately, I don't think I will have the time to wait for a custom set to be made.

I think I may just get standard Eagle rods and JE pistons. I looked into the Crower rods, but I think they are a bit of over kill for my purposes. I need to decide soon because I have to order the parts this week.

How long are you looking to be down with the car since you said not a lot of time?
