Best setup for a stop and go car?

Post by FiRnoEvO » Sun Mar 21, 2010 2:42 am

I was jus wondering if anyone could throw out some good ideas for a stop and go, torquey setup. i have a '98 R/T (420a), im thinking bout goin with a stroker to 2.2, top end rebuild, stage 1 tranny and clutch, with a supercharger set up. I dont want to swap to 2.4, wanna try to keep the originality of the 2.0 dohc, not as fast but more unique IMO. ideas? thoughts?

with a supercharger set up.
turbo charged i mean, my b. i know stroking with a turbo can be great or disastrous, but only pushing 7 or so pounds of boost would be straight, right?

Don't bother with the 2.2 stroker kit, either stay 2.0 or go 2.4. Originality is cool if you like to piss away thousands of dollars.

And you should lay off the video games with the "stage 1 tranny and clutch"

And Neonds don't have a 420a, those came in Avengers, Eclipses, Talons, etc.

Biggest bang for your buck is a 2.4L with SRT internals and boosted. Not original but there's a reason most people go that way. Cheap and it works.

Same bottom end, different head. Neon DOHCs are coded as ECB or ECC. One is SOHC one is DOHC, don't recall which is which for now.

There's not much out there for a "performance upgraded" transmission for Neons unless you wanna spend several thousand on one. Stick with the one you have, but if you do anything to it, get the diff pin retaining tabs from the dealership and install them. Like $7-10 or so. Not hard to install but you kinda gotta know what you're doing. They can be a bitch to put back together, especially if you use the bolts to pull bellhousing back onto the trans. You can break it easily that way.

i was hoping that there were more options for performance transmission set ups than i realized, damn that sucks. i would just have to swap to another stock transmission then, im starting to notice mine slipping alittle in 3rd gear. thanks for the info tho man, helps alot.

then my clutch is fucked... i jus know that shifting to third i loose rpms then it builds back up. like it stalls out for a couple seconds then returns accelerating... my toyota truck did this too kinda, but that was the master cylinder, i know thats not wats wrong here.

That doesn't make any sense at all. A slipping transmission (if an auto) or a slipping clutch will cause rpms to rise while the speed doesn't increase.

When you shift to 3rd your rpms will drop as it's a higher gear, and accellerating will bring them back up.

your shit is fucked then.
It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom!
