Need 1/8th mile drag racing pointers.

Post by uta_flyinghigh » Mon Feb 25, 2008 3:58 am

So it appears the rules for the 2008 drag racing in Tunisia have changed, they're getting concerned that some cars are getting too fast at the end of the 1/4 mile so we're be running 1/8th mile instead. So any pointers on how I should set up the car and the mods I need ?

Not really specific but more low end may help. The only thing Ive ever raced on is 1/8th mile. Makes you 60 foot very important!

Weak. 1/8th mile tracks suck. Get up to 80 and done.

Indeed, last year I had fun with my EJ8 in the 1/4 and smoked everyone (1.6 liter class). This year I'll be up againts E30's, a Calibra, a couple of Golf GTI's and a Merc C180K (and more that I do not know of yet).

So yesterday was the FIA briefing. New for this year : mandatory flame-retardant suit, extinguisher and electrical kill switch. For 1/8th mile racing. Jeez.

Weight redux: start with the weight the farthest back, and work forward. Motor mounts: solid mounts and bobble, if you can stand them on a DD. Suspension: stiffen everything up, springs bushings and struts. Cheap Ebay coilovers with 500 lb springs in the rear. The stiffer the rear is , the better. Tires: slicks may not be necessary at your power level, but drag radials will help. If you can use an exhaust dump, do so, just behind the header. Launch technique, practice, practice, practice.

Also, at what RPM should I launch ?

A dump is a "y" pipe between the header and the muffler that has a cap on it that can be removed when racing. With the "y" pipe uncorked you have basically an open exhaust. RPM for the launch is trial and error, based on tires, track, power level and launch technique.
