Identifying tranny overdrive ore 4speed 31th ??¿??

Post by JDtje » Tue Jun 22, 2010 4:22 am

Hello,

I drive a europe 1995 model Chrysler neon 2.0L LE Overdrive ATX.

Sinds i probably need to rebuild ore get a new tranny i wanted to know what tranny i had.

It says overdrive on the papers, but there is no button to find and when i drive it, it is more like a 4 speed tranny,
if i keep one speed for longer then 10 seconds it shifts in this 4th gear.

So. i went looking, i came across 31TH which was an A413 but when i looked up for parts it stated not to confuse it with the a607 overdrive, ore an a500.

So this is when i got really confused.

what is it and does someone has a repair manual of this tranny ore maybe knows one to find.

well, everywhere i got, they say its an 31TH TourqueFlite , so i ask do you have one in 4 speed ? ore is there one with overdrive ?
ans: neither of both as far as i know. :?

An other tranny repair man asked me more question,

what transmission do you have
31th a413 a604 ore an a670
"they where basically the same he said later"
Confused as i already was and not sure what tranny i have, and i had to answer
" I'm not certain. its an 31th with a 4th gear ore it is an overdrive without a button for it. "

So he laughs , go check the numbers and then come back to me.

Well now the problem is , my car is about an 100 miles from here in a garage for possible repair, so i cant check the numbers.

So i hoped,
( because the dodge and Chrysler engines are the same )
one of you could tell me what transmission it is.
otherwise i will buy me a 3 speed without the 4th speed ore the overdrive ( whichever it is ) and fuel consumption will rise without it, ore goes down any way worse then now

( especially highway is now +/-40mpg )
which is really nice for a 2 liter ATX on the highway.

well i hope you could help me out with this.

Thanks in advance

Greetz

You have a 31TH which is also known as the A413. All automatic neons from 1995 to 2001 have it from the factory. Has 3 forward speeds and no overdrive at all. Was also found in many of the 2.2 and 2.5 k cars. Omni, Aries, Spirit, etc.

The A670 is also a 3 speed , but found behind 3.0's, not in neons.

A604/41te is a four speed and was one of the first electronically shifted automatics. It first appeared on the neon in 2002. It has the overdrive.
NOT a direct replacement.

You are feeling the torque converter clutch engaging. Its a 3 speed transmission.

"torque converter clutch engaging"

Neither of all shops said anything about that, :?

Both thanks a lot.

torque converter clutch , i wouldn't have found that.

But... do all neons have this ??
because my papers state overdrive, so what does that mean.
that not all neons have this ?
it leafs me more questions.

I'm glad to know its just a 31th (a413) tranny, much easier to shop now.

Thanks alot,

Grateful

Almost every modern automatic transmission has a torque converter clutch (TCC). Yours definitely does. Overdrive is any gear with a ratio numerically lower than 1:1. All gears numerically higher than 1:1 are called under-drive. A 1:1 gear ratio is called direct drive.
