Have a question about how to make horsepower going the all motor route, here's where to ask it.

dohc block w/ sohc head

Post by 2fastneon » Fri Oct 26, 2007 5:14 pm

i was planning to run a crane 14 in the head the head has a valve job and is shaved .040 thousands, a mp dohc computer, and long tube headers, with 3.0 intake, atx tb you guys think this will be a good set up for 14's quarter mile. there will probably be a couple more mods but with that compression i was thinkin itd be pretty fast?

Yeah, should be good, but I think your going to have piston to head clearance issue. Might want to make sure your pistons aren't hitting stuff when you assemble the block.

idk why u jus dont get the dohc head but its your choice, either way on my dd i was gonna put the doch pistns in my block (sohc head) but then decided its too much of a risk because on some blocks for some reason the pistons need to be filed down or else they rub and break and such. Thats about half of what i heard other ppl said it worked out awesome for like 10 more horse. Come spring im jus gonna grind down the head .02 (.04 max atleast wouldnt recommend goin past it) for like 5 horse and leave the rest stock. the junkyards sell the heads for like 25 bux either or around my house, id jus get a fresh head and start there

with a dohc pistons and sohc head youll be lookin at around 10-1 compression...no filing of any thing is needed..

i was going to say i see people running 12 to 1 compression and they dont seem to have clearance problems i kno there are valve reliefs but wutevr. i would do a dohc but i kinda like my single. i also have a dohc already just it a pain in my ass to work on compared to my single. also with my single theres more room in the engine bay, and i hate the way the dohc's intake mani is connected to the thermostat housing, idk its alotta things i dunno what to do yet. :?

is there anyone else who has done this before i kno people have i would just also like input from them personaly thnks

im using the SOHC head w/ Crane #12 on a DOHC block. but my head isnt shaved that low tho(about .020). yea you may have some piston to valve clearance issues. I think you need to check that out.

Im told the CR with that combo is raised at about 10.3:1. itll probably be higher than that since your head is decked a little more. Im using a modded MLS head gasket. read more on it, im sure the .org has more info. but there's the chance someone will reply with a "SEARCH" statement...lol

try this it mite help....

as long as the head is not shaved only trued their should be no real problems.. if you use high compresion pistons they will be made for your motor.

well the head was never shaved before i originally told the guy to shave it .030 but somehow they did .040 idk. i was doing the math on that compression calculator and with dohc block and sohc head shave .040 my compression will be about 11.1 to 1 lol i might just get another head and shave it .020, i dont think the motor is gonna hold up to that compression

it should. but if you have an upgraded cam of some sort, i dont know. 040 seems like too much shaving. like i said look it up.

Do it, bolt it all together (use old head bolts and other TTY bolts like the rod cap bolts) but put a small thin layer of clay on the pistons. Time it, and turn it over a few times. Take it back apart. See if anything hit the clay. If not, then you are good. If there's clay anywhere, figure out how much clearance it has. If you gooped the shit on there obviously it ain't gonna work but if it's real thin, it'd be fine to check for clearances.

do what chip said. thats is what a friend told me he did and he has 13.1. but i got the dohc with sohc top not milled (which is 10.3:1), mpx longtube, mopar 95 sohc, magnacore wires, atx tb, 3.0 intake, ghetto udp, no ps or ac, mancini racing strut bars, solid mounts all around, booger bushing, alot of weigh reduction and 355 trans. and holy cow i beat a stock 1gn rt by like 6 cars the tires just dont want to stop spinning when i launch. i have to half throlled it till it catches then gun it. 1st gear at a roll just spins out. i was going to swich to the 394 trans but seeing as it flys throw the rpms im not going to.
