Need help deciding

Post by FLNeonRT » Fri Jul 27, 2007 6:34 am

Since I have yet to hear a good answer on the other boards I post on, I'll re-post here aswell.....

I am about to rip the head off my 2.0L to do a head gasket, timing belt and both oil and water pumps. I know the head is warped a bit from overheating and I'd like to use ever chance I have to upgrade something. I have a cylinder head here that came from Crane in th beginning that has all their goodies in it as well but I just need lifters and rockers to finish. I also have a set of Crane 18s. Well, I was holding onto all of it for my 2.4L build but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna ditch that (don't have room to keep piling parts up and have other issues in life right now).

Now the question. I'm still on a stock bottom end for now boosting 7-9psi with a conservative tune. Can I get anything out of putting the new head on with the 18s centerlined? I probably won't do gears yet since I don't have them but will wait till the engine comes apart again to do internals and then throw a set on.

Can I get anything out of the 18s right now?

Yes i would think you could see some nice gains with the 18s.

You need something more suited for a turbo application, but i don't think the 18s will be hurting you in a negative fashion.

You are still limited to the strength of the factory rods and rod bolts. You may be able to strengthen the stock rods by removing the casting lines and polishing them. You could contact ARP to see if you can get a stronger set of rod bolts.

The bottom end is not my concern.I know its weak, but what results do you think I'll see from putting in such a radical set of cams on a mild build right now?

Depends on where your powerband is. My boss said 18's were too radical with his SRT turbo pushing 22 psi.
