sohc pistons in dohc.

Post by racyneon » Sun Apr 08, 2007 10:31 pm

Would it be a good idea to lower the compression using sohc pistons in a dohc before turboing it? Is the stock compression on a dohc ok for a turbo setup running around 8-10 pounds of boost?

Putting in SOHC pistons will reduce compression a bit. I believe, stock compression on a DOHC is fine for 5-7 psi.

You can run 8-10psi on a stock DOHC safely with a good tune. A GOOD TUNE. I have also seen some people running 12psi, but you better have the best tune and a stout engine to try that. I'm very comfortable running 8psi. I would run a little more, but my engine is old (140,000 miles) and all stock inside.

Using SOHC pistons with a DOHC head will lower the compression. The lower the compression is, the lower the cylinder pressure will ultimately be. Having a lower cylinder pressure allows you to run a little more boost (which will raise cylinder pressure) and timing advance on the same octane fuel.
