3.55 trans -> 3.94 trans
3.55 trans -> 3.94 trans
This was on my mag swapped neon that I sold. If you think about it, you're adding a lot of tq at the wheels with this baby, and that's what counts!
Obviously if it's a cable bellhousing to cable bellhousing, it will bolt right in.
Too bad mine was from a 2003 r/t, with low low miles that I picked up for $300. Well, not so bad when you swap the bellhousings.
More acceleration everywhere! I was hoping to knock 3 tenths off of my 1/4 mile times, but that never happened. I wasn't able to do a fair comparison. Previously I went 15.0xx@90.XX in the old regular sohc when it was 45* out.
Then after the mag engine swap/mag header/3.94 it went 14.87@92.3mph as it's best run in 80* weather. The butt dyno says this is the best mod I ever did. Recommended for just about every 3.55er out there.
Negatives. Since I used an r/t trans it gave me a .81 5th gear, which means more highway noise and a drop in milage. I was never able to get over 40 mpg again. Best mpg after that was 36 I believe.
Get either a first gen regular dohc trans (not r/t or acr) or a 3.94 from a pt cruiser (later years got the .72 fifth)
It wouldn't be so bad if I lived near a lot of hills/lower speeds though.

They both have their place in a Neon.
I have one of each, and it's like the best of both worlds.
Mikey has a 3.94, with the twincam and the fairly extensive mods, he is a high strung autocross machine; the gearing allows me to use 2nd gear all the way through most courses and still gives me the torque to pull hard out of turns. He is a bitch to drive at highway speeds, just as a sporty car should be.. the revs are so high that with the exhaust I have on him I can barely hear the stereo at 75 mph.. he screams to be driven at the edge!
Miguel, on the other hand, has a totally stock SOHC; the P/S and A/C intact. With his 3.55 tranny, I can barely hear the engine at 75 mph, listening instead to the stereo as God intended for people to do on longer trips.
If I hadn't already named them Mikey and Miguel, I could have named them Jekyl and Hyde, they are so different, and a good bit of the reason is the gearing difference of the transmissions.

More Neons than sense.

This is the first mod every SOHC guy should do. I just put an r/t trans and new stock clutch on my SOHC sedan this weekend and it's the best mod I have done to the car. With the stock cam, the SOHC has zero top end and the 3.55 just drags that out. The 3.94 really helps the SOHC go through the revs to redline much better.

Lol I just did this swap a few weeks ago and I love it. We'll see how much it took off my track times, my original time was similar to yours, except for the whole not having a TPS thing my car is the same as it was then. Damn TPS robbed me at least a tenth and 2 mph.

Uh last time I was at the track it was in November, last weekend it was open. Track opens this weekend but I'll be back there next Saturday when they have racing for $15. Tracks close up here for some reason. I think it has something to do with the several feet of snow we get every winter
